Drawn Together, Pen Tool Exercise Part 3

Learning to use the pen tool, eye dropper and layers palette to create a fully drawn recreation of a cartoon character.

Assignment

  • For this project you will:

  • Download a cartoon character of your choosing

  • In Adobe Illustrator or Gravit Pro

    • The Pen Tool (P)

      • To create a series of shapes that will, when fully completed will be a redrawing of the character

        • These shapes should be

          • One continuous line around the whole part that you are drawing

            • except in the case for small hairs that protrude out from the object

            • Use a red outline to see where you are tracing

              • When you finish the tracing use the eye dropper tool to sample the color of the shape

                • refer to your tool bar cheat sheet to locate the eye dropper tool and it's keyboard short cut (the letter after it's name)

    • The Layer Palette

      • Lock the layer with the Cartoon Character

      • Create a new layer for each part of the character you are drawing

        • For example, the part of the drawing that is below everything will be the first thing you draw. For the picture of Dexter I would start with the arm and glove on the right side of the drawing since it is below his head and lab coat. Then I would create a new layer for the legs, then coat, then the other glove, then head, etc.

    • After completing the exercise

      • To the point you are confident that you have done the best you can without reservation

      • Create 1 PDF of the Illustrator file

        • File>Save as...

        • Use "PDF" as the file format

          • Turn in this file through Jupiter Grades

Requirements

  • Your file must be a PDF to be graded.

  • Turn in your PDF to Jupiter Grades, make sure that the PDF preview is enabled

  • Make sure you are confident that your work is done before you upload the file

    • The work uploaded should be the best you can do

      • If you have questions or can't figure something out ask me
